A Frosty Noel




Considering I'm the least Christmassy person I know, it's a bit of a mystery why I entered a decoration swap.  I saw it on Twitter (as you do) and thought - why not?  Today, with a name and address sitting in my inbox awaiting a delivery, I thought I'd better get cracking and make something.

I'm not sure which one I'll send yet, but there's a choice of two.  The "Noel" heart above.  A red corduory heart, reverse appliqued behind a cream wool outer (I'll get rid of this huge blanket eventually!).  I've chain-stitched the wording using white Perle 12 thread.  The flowers are simply "yo-yo's" which I've stitched into the centres a few times to pull in to form petal shapes.  To hang, I've used a length of vintage brocade trim.  It's a bit big for the Christmas tree, but I think it may look rather nice on a door handle or at the window.  So..... do I send the heart?  or do I send Frosty?

  Frosty is about the same size.  Funnily enough he's also made from a piece of THE blanket.  I fear he looks a bit hypnotic (or stoned) with the blue button eyes.  His nose is red from the cold by the way, and nothing to do with the fact that I couldn't find any carrot orange thread.  I had just enough felt to make a little scarf.  Bless him, he looks totally bemused.

One of them will be winging it's way through the post tomorrow.  Which one do you reckon will be best received?


PS.....  I'll be making more of these snowmen.  I did a big batch of them a couple of years ago and attached them to presents.  A bottle of plonk - with "Cheers" as the wording.  A scarf with "Be Warm".
They are so quick to make.  I know it's really simple, but if you fancy making one for yourself I'll be posting the template, along with a selection of suitable embroidery words in the next few days.  A great way of using up scraps, as long as they white or cream.  And rather than a felt scarf, they look jolly lovely with a knitted or crochet one (which I may make a few of this evening, if I can locate my bag of yarn).

Hexagon hand-towel

A super quick make this afternoon - a hand towel for the kitchen.  I had no idea I was going to do this until I was rummaging through my fabric stash and found this piece of heavy linen that has been forgotten for years.   It's the perfect weight for a hand towel and I've managed to use up a few more scraps to match the colours of my kitchen. The little piece of aqua fabric is one of my favourites.  Had it for years and my supply has been dwindling, finally down to the last little piece.   It was a quick pin-down and run along with the machine. As you can see, a close inspection of my hexagon shows rather uneven stitches.   I blame it on my eyesight (and sewing whilst watching the TV).  Pinned into place and then edged around carefully with the machine.   I've even managed to add a little loop which is the tiniest scrap of ribbon I spied in the corner of my sewing table just as I was stitching to the corner.... I'll have that...

Hillarys Blinds - Country Crafts Competition

A vision in Teal - front view Towards the end of February I saw a competition advertised on Twitter by Hillarys Blinds .  I can't remember the exact wording, but it was along the lines of "would you like to receive some material and enter our competition?" Of course I would! After sending an e-mail, I was delighted to hear I'd been chosen to take part.  I was able to pick from 3 fabrics.  I opted for the peacock print as I adore teal.  About a week later I received a packet from Hillarys containing a metre of my chosen material.  I wish I could get the colours to come out properly.  I don't think any of the photos I've taken do the fabric justice.  The background is a light cream, with the branches and blossom in subtle shades of brown and pale yellows.  Sitting on the branches across the fabric are a selection of beautiful peacocks.  In shades of teal, they are quite wonderful. Summer Daze Bag

I can hardly believe a whole month has passed since my last creative post. Doesn't time fly!   I haven't been sat on my backside doing nothing (the whole time).  Aside from moving house, and getting hubby settled into his new work-away apartment - I have done a little bit of sewing. Another bag!  (Like I need one).  I just enjoy making them, and I love the style of this one. If you've been following my blog for a while, you may recognise the shape.  It's yet another version of my Sophie bag (for which I have been meaning to produce the pattern - like - forever).  It's such a nice bag to carry around.  Light, roomy and comfortable, in a slightly squishy, holds it's shape well sort of way. It was supposed to be a quick, run it up in an evening make.  Ha ha ha.
